St. Gertrude of Nivelles Prayer for Cats

For those of us with cats, it’s normal to worry about them and want the best for them. It could also be the case that we are worried because our cat is sick or lost. If this is the case, please do not despair. St. Gertrude is the patron saint of cats, and through her intercession a cat is bound to lead a long and happy life.

Having a cat as a companion can be a blessing for many of us. However, we may few powerless to help them if they are sick. The patron saint of cats can help intercede on our behalf so that our cats will be healed. Here we have written down a powerful prayer to get St. Gertrude of Nivelles, the patron saint of cats, to ask for help for a sick feline.

St. Gertrude can help not only with a sick cat. Cats can be very curious creatures. Sometimes they end up going farther from home than they are used to, and getting lost. A prayer to St. Gertrude to help find a lost cat can be of great comfort if you are looking for your cat.

Note that St. Gertrude is the patron saint of cats only, not of all domesticated animals. Although praying for her is always helpful, if you’re worried about a dog, consider praying to St. Roch, the patron saint of dogs.

Who is St. Gertrude of Nivelles?

Gertrude of Nivelles (c. 628 – March 17, 659) is the patron saint of cats and travellers. She was born in present-day Belgium, the daughter of a noble family. Her father, Pepin of Landen, was the mayor of the palace and chief counsellor to King Dagobert I of the Franks. Her mother, Itta of Metz, was a devout woman who had a great influence on her daughter’s religious development.

Gertrude was educated at the monastery of Nivelles, which her mother founded. She became a nun at the age of 15 and was later chosen to be abbess. Under her leadership, the monastery flourished and became known for its sanctity and learning. She welcomed many pilgrims, and acquired many holy relics for her monastery.

Gertrude was known for her great charity and compassion, especially for the sick and the poor. Her compassion extended to all animals as well, and she was loved by all. Out of all animals living in her monastery, she was said to be fond of cats the most. This is why she is now the patron saint of cats.

Gertrude died in 659, at the age of 31. She was buried in the monastery church, which later became a pilgrimage site. Her feast day is March 17.
